‘I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For’ – Talk About Pop Music
The song, “I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For”, was originally recorded by U2 in 1987
“I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For” was written and recorded by Irish band U2 for their 1987 studio album, “The Joshua Tree”. It was released as the second single in May that year and peaked at No.6 in the UK and No.1 in America, as well as charting top ten in a further fifteen countries.
In 1990, Scottish band The Chimes, lead by singer Pauline Henry, covered the song with a more dance-pop rhythm to it, producing a more soulful take on the original. Amazingly, this too peaked at No.6 in the UK in May/June that year and was a big hit across Europe. Bono of U2 would later remark that the song was “the only cover version he had heard that he enjoyed and did the original justice”. Praise indeed!
But which version is the best? U2’s original or The CHIMES’ cover?
